Acura RL - A Brief History

The Acura RL, a flagship mid-size sedan by Honda’s luxury brand Acura, was first introduced to the North American market in 1996 to replace the second-generation Acura Legend. The alpha call-sign "RL" is an abbreviation for "Refined Luxury.” The RL has never been notably large or roomy, and it's always had a V6 as its sole engine choice.

Acura RL - SH AWD

In road tests, the Acura RL gets better the harder it's driven, thanks to the SH-AWD (Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive) system, which tenaciously maintains traction. The ride is tuned more on the cushier side of the spectrum, so despite offering notable handling abilities, it is still principally designed to be a comfortable cruiser.

Acura RL - Notable Recalls by Honda Motor Corporation

There have been two recalls on the Acura RL, based on defects in parts used in both Acura and Honda vehicles. In December 2007, certain 2005–2008 model Acura RLs were subject to a safety recall for the power steering hose. Affected vehicles were to be inspected and repaired, as applicable, at no charge. Reportedly, this recall extended to both 2005–2008 Acura RL and 2004–2008 Acura TL models.

In December 2010, certain 2005–2007 model Acura RLs were subject to a safety recall for potential leaking of the brake master cylinder seal. A seal in the brake master cylinder may be susceptible to damage following the use of brake fluid other than the recommended Acura or (Honda) Genuine DOT3 brake fluid. If the seal is damaged, and driver continues to drive the vehicle without refilling the brake fluid, it could affect braking performance and increase the likelihood of a crash.
