Toyota’s Common Issues (And How You Can Avoid Them!)

Common Toyota Problems You Need To Look Out For

Toyota vehicles are known for their reliability and durability. However, even the most reliable cars need regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly. Ignoring routine maintenance can lead to more serious issues down the road and, ultimately, more money spent on costly repairs.

Let's discuss some of the most common vehicle problems with Toyota vehicles and how you can avoid them with proper preventative maintenance and a knowledgeable auto repair shop you can rely on.

Engine Oil Leaks

One of Toyota's most common service issues is engine oil leaks. Components become brittle or crack over time due to regular exposure to heat and pressure, causing oil leaks. To catch or prevent this issue from occurring, it's important that you have your vehicle inspected during the engine oil change (roughly every 5 thousand miles). Let’s make sure your vehicle’s seals remain properly lubricated, so they are less likely to leak.

Common causes of oil leaks with Toyota vehicles include:

  • Worn out seals
  • Cracked & worn gaskets
  • Faulty oil filter seal
  • Worn out oil pan gasket
  • And plain old time and mileage

Brakes Wearing Out Quickly

Some Toyota vehicles are notorious for brakes wearing out quickly—sometimes in as little as 20,000 miles! Other Toyotas, typically Hybrid vehicles, can last well past 100,000 miles. It is important to check your brakes frequently; this will help identify any issues early on so they can be addressed before you cause any further damage to your brake rotors or other brake components.

While you are getting your brakes checked and the mechanic has your tires off, be sure they are properly inflated and balance your tires. This will help our overall driving experience be better over time.

Power Steering Fluid Leaks

This issue occurs when the power steering pump's O-ring starts leaking, leading to a decrease in power steering fluid levels. To avoid this issue, it's recommended that you check your power steering fluid levels every few months (or any time you notice a change in driving performance). Be sure to check your power steering fluid when the vehicle is cold; there is typically a cold level and a hot level.

If your power steering fluid level is low, that typically means you have some sort of leak starting. There may be an underlying problem with your system that should be addressed immediately by an experienced auto repair technician.

Ignition System Problems

Ignition system problems can cause a wide range of issues with your vehicle, from poor fuel economy to engine misfires or stalling. Ignition systems can become worn out over time due to normal wear-and-tear or due to dirt and debris getting into the system. Having an auto repair shop inspect your ignition system periodically to make sure your internal combustion is working properly, wires routed properly, and the ignition cap & rotor are not worn will ensure that your vehicle stays in good working order.

While Toyota vehicles are known for their reliability and durability, it is important that you perform regular maintenance in order to keep them running smoothly for years to come. Have an auto repair shop check for common issues such as oil leaks, brake wear, and ignition system problems, and you can help avoid costly repairs down the road!

Taking care of these small issues now will save you money in the long run. We hope that is helpful, and please feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions about your Toyota!
