Cold A/C in summer. Real heat in winter.

When your AC blows warm or the heater never warms up, the cause can be anything from low refrigerant to a failed blend door. We diagnose it properly so you pay for the fix that works, not a recharge that leaks out in a month.

We test system pressures, find leaks with dye or an electronic detector and repair compressors, condensers, hoses and seals. We service both older R-134a systems and the newer R-1234yf refrigerant used in most cars built since about 2015. Hybrids often use an electric AC compressor that needs a special non-conductive oil, and the wrong oil can damage it. We use the right one.

No heat usually traces back to the cooling system: low coolant, a stuck thermostat, a clogged heater core or a bad blend door actuator. Weak airflow often comes from a clogged cabin air filter or a failing blower motor. A working defroster is a safety item in the Bay Area's foggy mornings, so we treat it that way.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why is my car AC blowing warm air?

The most common cause is low refrigerant from a leak. Other causes include a failed compressor, a bad cooling fan, an electrical fault or a stuck blend door. We test the system to find which one it is.

  • Can't I just recharge the AC myself?

A can of refrigerant may cool things for a while, but if there is a leak it will return. Overcharging can also damage the compressor. Finding and fixing the leak is the lasting repair.

  • Why does my AC smell musty?

A musty smell usually comes from a dirty cabin air filter or moisture and mold on the evaporator. Replacing the filter and cleaning the evaporator usually clears it up.

A+ has been my auto repair shop for the last 5 years. They have an outstanding crew that are always very professional and thorough in assessing the car, identifying issues, and fixing them right the first time. If you have japanese car this is the #1 shop.

This is my first time going to A+ Japanese Auto Repair and I plan to return for other car repair/maintenance services. I appreciate the total transparency and honesty. The complementary ride to and from the shop is extremely helpful. As a bonus they have loyal rewards program and all work is backed by a warranty which they explain what it is. The staff is friendly and answer questions that you have.

Took my 19 year old Tacoma to A+ Japanese Auto based on the reviews. I knew it needed a 150K service, and they suggested an inspection along with an oil change so they could determine what services were needed. The front office staff was exceptional from the time I made my appointment, arrived to the shop, and discussed the recommended repairs. The technicians took detailed photos shown me by my service provider. She explained all of the details regarding the repairs necessay and helped categorize the repairs based on safety. I was very impressed with this level of service, and highly recommend this business.
