Tight, precise steering again.

Steering problems tend to creep in slowly, until the car feels vague on the freeway or heavy in a parking lot. Because steering is a safety system, small symptoms deserve a quick look.

Older vehicles use hydraulic power steering with a pump, hoses and fluid. Most newer Toyotas, Hondas and nearly all hybrids use electric power steering, which has no fluid at all. Each fails in its own way, and we diagnose both.

Signs your steering needs attention
  • The wheel feels heavy, stiff or notchy when turning
  • A whine or groan when you turn the wheel
  • Play or looseness, or a clunk over bumps
  • Power steering fluid leaking under the front of the car
  • A steering warning light on the dash

We inspect tie rod ends, the steering rack, the pump or electric motor, hoses and mounts, then repair what is worn. Steering parts set your wheel angles, so we finish most steering repairs with an alignment.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why is my steering wheel hard to turn?

On hydraulic systems, low fluid or a failing pump is the usual cause. On electric steering, it can be a sensor, motor or electrical fault. A steering warning light usually comes on with electric steering problems.

  • What causes a whining noise when I turn?

A whine is most often a sign of low or old power steering fluid or a worn pump. Have it checked early, because running the pump low on fluid damages it quickly.

  • Is loose steering dangerous?

It can be. Play in the wheel often comes from worn tie rod ends or other steering joints, which affect control. We recommend having it inspected soon.

This is my first time going to A+ Japanese Auto Repair and I plan to return for other car repair/maintenance services. I appreciate the total transparency and honesty. The complementary ride to and from the shop is extremely helpful. As a bonus they have loyal rewards program and all work is backed by a warranty which they explain what it is. The staff is friendly and answer questions that you have.

Took my 19 year old Tacoma to A+ Japanese Auto based on the reviews. I knew it needed a 150K service, and they suggested an inspection along with an oil change so they could determine what services were needed. The front office staff was exceptional from the time I made my appointment, arrived to the shop, and discussed the recommended repairs. The technicians took detailed photos shown me by my service provider. She explained all of the details regarding the repairs necessay and helped categorize the repairs based on safety. I was very impressed with this level of service, and highly recommend this business.
