Smooth shifts start with the right fluid.

Transmission repairs are some of the most expensive on any car, and most of them start with old or wrong fluid. Regular fluid service is the best protection you can buy.

Many Nissan, Honda, Subaru and Toyota models use a continuously variable transmission, or CVT. CVTs are sensitive to fluid type and condition. They need the exact fluid your manufacturer specifies, and some need a computer relearn after service. We follow those procedures on every job.

Have your transmission checked if you notice slipping, delayed or harsh shifts, a whine or shudder when accelerating, a burning smell, red fluid under the car or a check engine light. We start with a scan for transmission codes, a fluid check and a road test. Many problems turn out to be fluid, a sensor or a software update rather than a full transmission.

If your transmission does need major work, we will explain the options and costs clearly so you can decide what makes sense for your car.

Frequently asked questions

  • How often should I change my transmission fluid?

It depends on your vehicle and driving. Many manufacturers recommend service between 30,000 and 60,000 miles under severe conditions, which includes frequent stop-and-go traffic. We will look up the right interval for your car.

  • My manual says the fluid is lifetime. Do I still need service?

"Lifetime" often means the life of the warranty. Fluid still breaks down with heat and age. Changing it periodically is inexpensive protection for one of the costliest parts of your car.

  • Is a transmission flush bad for an older car?

A careful fluid exchange with the correct fluid is safe for most vehicles. We inspect the fluid and the car's history first and recommend the gentlest approach that does the job.

This is my first time going to A+ Japanese Auto Repair and I plan to return for other car repair/maintenance services. I appreciate the total transparency and honesty. The complementary ride to and from the shop is extremely helpful. As a bonus they have loyal rewards program and all work is backed by a warranty which they explain what it is. The staff is friendly and answer questions that you have.

Took my 19 year old Tacoma to A+ Japanese Auto based on the reviews. I knew it needed a 150K service, and they suggested an inspection along with an oil change so they could determine what services were needed. The front office staff was exceptional from the time I made my appointment, arrived to the shop, and discussed the recommended repairs. The technicians took detailed photos shown me by my service provider. She explained all of the details regarding the repairs necessay and helped categorize the repairs based on safety. I was very impressed with this level of service, and highly recommend this business.
