Close-up of a complex mechanical engine with gears, chains, and metal components

That rattle at startup is worth listening to.

Most newer engines use a timing chain instead of a belt to keep the valves and pistons in sync. Chains are built to last the life of the engine, but only with clean oil and working tensioners. When the guides wear or a tensioner weakens, the chain loosens and slaps against its guides. Left alone, it can skip a tooth or break.

Signs of a worn timing chain

  • A rattle for a few seconds after a cold start
  • A check engine light with cam or crank correlation codes, such as P0016 or P0017
  • Rough running, misfires or a loss of power
  • Metal flakes in the oil at an oil change

We start by listening at startup, scanning for codes and checking cam and crank timing data with a scan tool. That tells us whether the chain has stretched before we take anything apart. When a repair is needed, we replace the chain, guides, tensioners and gears as a set. On engines where the chain also drives the water pump, we will tell you whether to replace the pump at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I know if my car has a timing chain or belt?

Check your owner's manual maintenance schedule. If it lists a timing chain replacement, you have a chain. Give us your year, make and model and we can tell you right away.

  • How long does a timing chain last?

Many last the life of the engine, often well past 150,000 miles. Skipped oil changes, low oil and the wrong oil grade are the most common reasons they wear out early.

  • Is a timing chain rattle dangerous?

A brief rattle at startup is an early warning, not an emergency. But a worn chain can skip a tooth or break, and on many engines that causes serious damage. Have it checked soon rather than waiting for it to get louder.

This is my first time going to A+ Japanese Auto Repair and I plan to return for other car repair/maintenance services. I appreciate the total transparency and honesty. The complementary ride to and from the shop is extremely helpful. As a bonus they have loyal rewards program and all work is backed by a warranty which they explain what it is. The staff is friendly and answer questions that you have.

Took my 19 year old Tacoma to A+ Japanese Auto based on the reviews. I knew it needed a 150K service, and they suggested an inspection along with an oil change so they could determine what services were needed. The front office staff was exceptional from the time I made my appointment, arrived to the shop, and discussed the recommended repairs. The technicians took detailed photos shown me by my service provider. She explained all of the details regarding the repairs necessay and helped categorize the repairs based on safety. I was very impressed with this level of service, and highly recommend this business.
