Modified car engine with gold valve cover, pink cam gears, and silver exhaust manifolds.

Replace it before it breaks.

A timing belt keeps your engine's valves and pistons moving in sync. It gives no warning before it snaps. Most manufacturers call for a new timing belt between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, or after a set number of years even if you drive less. We will look up the exact interval for your engine and tell you whether yours is due. Not every engine has a belt. Many newer engines use a timing chain, and we will tell you which one you have.

The labor to reach a timing belt is the biggest part of the job. That is why we replace the tensioner and idler pulleys at the same time, and usually the water pump too, since it is driven by the same belt on many engines. It costs far less to do them together than to go back in later.

We use quality kits and set timing to factory specifications, then road test before we hand you the keys.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I know if my car has a timing belt or chain?

Check your owner's manual maintenance schedule. If it lists a timing belt replacement, you have a belt. Give us your year, make and model and we can tell you right away.

  • What happens if my timing belt breaks?

The engine stops immediately. On an interference engine, the valves and pistons can collide and cause major engine damage. On a non-interference engine, you will need a tow but the engine is usually spared.

  • Should I replace the water pump with the timing belt?

On engines where the timing belt drives the water pump, we recommend it. Most of the cost is the labor to reach them, so replacing both at once saves you from paying that labor twice.

A+ has been my auto repair shop for the last 5 years. They have an outstanding crew that are always very professional and thorough in assessing the car, identifying issues, and fixing them right the first time. If you have japanese car this is the #1 shop.

This is my first time going to A+ Japanese Auto Repair and I plan to return for other car repair/maintenance services. I appreciate the total transparency and honesty. The complementary ride to and from the shop is extremely helpful. As a bonus they have loyal rewards program and all work is backed by a warranty which they explain what it is. The staff is friendly and answer questions that you have.

Took my 19 year old Tacoma to A+ Japanese Auto based on the reviews. I knew it needed a 150K service, and they suggested an inspection along with an oil change so they could determine what services were needed. The front office staff was exceptional from the time I made my appointment, arrived to the shop, and discussed the recommended repairs. The technicians took detailed photos shown me by my service provider. She explained all of the details regarding the repairs necessay and helped categorize the repairs based on safety. I was very impressed with this level of service, and highly recommend this business.
