Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
If the light is steady and the car drives normally, it is usually safe to drive to the shop soon. If it is flashing, or the car runs rough, reduce speed and have it checked right away to avoid damage.
Can a loose gas cap turn on the check engine light?
Yes. A loose or worn gas cap can set an evaporative system code. Tighten it until it clicks. If the light stays on after a few drives, bring it in.
Why don't you just read the code and replace the part?
A code points to a system, not a specific part. Testing first means you pay for the repair that actually fixes the problem, instead of parts that may not.

The founder of A+ came to the United States from Turkey and started out as a bicycle mechanic, then spent years as a head technician at a dealership. In 1997, in his mid-40s, he opened A+ Japanese Auto Repair in San Carlos. It was a family affair from the first day.
