Mechanics working beneath a car on a lift in a garage, adjusting parts near the wheel well

Hear a clicking when you turn? We can fix it.

CV (constant velocity) axles carry power from the transmission to your wheels while they steer and move up and down. Every front-wheel and all-wheel drive car has them, which covers most Hondas, Toyotas and every Subaru.

Each CV joint is packed in grease and sealed by a rubber boot. Once that boot cracks or tears, grease slings out and dirt and water get in. The joint then wears quickly. A torn boot caught early can sometimes be replaced alone. A joint that is already noisy needs a new axle.

Signs of a bad CV axle
  • A clicking or popping sound when turning, especially in parking lots
  • Grease splattered on the inside of the wheel or suspension
  • A vibration when accelerating that goes away when you coast
  • A clunk when shifting between drive and reverse\

We check boots at every inspection, so you hear about a tear before it turns into a failed axle. When an axle needs replacing, we install a quality unit and check the related suspension and alignment parts while we are there.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is it safe to drive with a clicking CV axle?

For a short time, usually yes, but the joint will keep wearing. If it fails completely, the car can lose drive to that wheel. Have it replaced before the clicking turns into a breakdown.

  • Can you replace just the CV boot?

Sometimes. If the boot just tore and the joint is still quiet and clean, a boot replacement may work. Once the joint is noisy or contaminated, a new axle is the more reliable fix.

  • How long do CV axles last?

Many last well over 100,000 miles as long as the boots stay intact. Torn boots are the main reason they fail early, which is why we check them at every inspection.

This is my first time going to A+ Japanese Auto Repair and I plan to return for other car repair/maintenance services. I appreciate the total transparency and honesty. The complementary ride to and from the shop is extremely helpful. As a bonus they have loyal rewards program and all work is backed by a warranty which they explain what it is. The staff is friendly and answer questions that you have.

Took my 19 year old Tacoma to A+ Japanese Auto based on the reviews. I knew it needed a 150K service, and they suggested an inspection along with an oil change so they could determine what services were needed. The front office staff was exceptional from the time I made my appointment, arrived to the shop, and discussed the recommended repairs. The technicians took detailed photos shown me by my service provider. She explained all of the details regarding the repairs necessay and helped categorize the repairs based on safety. I was very impressed with this level of service, and highly recommend this business.
